History of the Graduate Life Center

Late 1990’s Discussions about designating an area for graduate students within one of the existing student centers. Consideration was given to the rearrangement/renovation of the Johnston Student Center with the development of a new graduate student lounge.
2001 As a result of a comprehensive review and subsequent reorganization, Research and Graduate Studies separated into the Research Division and the Graduate School.
Aug 2002 Dr. Karen DePauw arrived and assumed leadership for graduate education by becoming Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate School.
Dec 2002 Dr. DePauw submitted a program statement for the renovation of the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center (DBHCC) to transform it into graduate education/life space.

2003 Alternative use plans by Student Programs, University Unions and Student Activities (UUSA), Cook Counseling and Schiffert Health Center were considered.
Jan 2004
Decision was made to renovate DBHCC and turn it into a Graduate Life Center (GLC). Extensive planning began with a unique collaboration among the Graduate School, Student Programs, and UUSA.
Oct 2004 Housing sent out letter to survey interest in new housing option in Donaldson Brown.
Oct 2004 The Graduate School and UUSA began holding meetings to prepare for GLC implementation.
Jan 2005 Housing began advertising the Donaldson Brown Residence Hall.
Feb 7, 2005 UUSA Event Planning began reserving the auditorium and multipurpose room for the 05-06 academic year.
Jun 30, 2005 The hotel and conference center vacated the building.
July 1, 2005 Graduate School, Student Programs, and UUSA took possession of Donaldson Brown to begin the transformation. Phase I renovation began, including re-carpeting of most meeting rooms on the first floor, electric and mechanical work, removal of old hotel furniture and signage. Extensive work on upper floors to bring residential area up to code compliance.
Aug 12, 2005 Completion of construction in residential area.
Aug 14, 2005 Graduate student residents began to move in.
Aug 15, 2005
Beginning with the first session of the Graduate Teaching Assistant Workshop, the Graduate Life Center officially opened for business. Opening celebrations were held in September 2005.
Sept 2005 Alumni Association moves out of Alumni Hall and Donaldson Brown and into their new home at the Holtzman Alumni Center.
Sept 2005 UUSA hires graduate student staff to support daily operations.
Oct 2005 UUSA hires GLC facility manager.
Jan - Jul 2006 Phase II renovations to complete first floor of the GLC and prepare Alumni Hall for the Graduate School.
Summer 2006 Community kitchens and lounges will be added to Donaldson Brown Residence Hall.
Fall 2006 Graduate School will relocate to Alumni Hall. Graduate housing and the GLC will be fully operational and celebrated with a Grand Opening.
